Fascism : The Not True Scotsman of Politics.

If you ask leftists whether there existed non-fascist totalitarian regimes they will say no. In fact to them Fascism is a floating abstraction which has no distinguishing characteristics from other totalitarian regimes. It is merely used as a placeholder for all failed totalitarian states. The hope is that by labeling even failed leftist states as fascist, they can relieve themselves from explaining the abundance of totalitarian regimes which started out as leftist, and I would argue, even ended themselves by being leftist.
