If life can thought of as a process that resists anything that negatively affects its sustenance, then viruses can be thought to be one of the most alive creatures. If natural-selection of nature wins over rational-manipulation & intelligence of man then I fear viruses may be the future of all life.
The recent discovery of the new vaccine resistant H5N1 strain gives me the creeps. Imagine bleeding through you nostrils, ears and eye sockets. Imagine drowning in your own blood bled into your lungs, and turning blue due to the lack of oxygen as we struggle to clear the airways of the bloody froth. At such times no one cares about anything. The victim would subject itself into a state of non-existence. The last time H5N1 got fine-tuned by nature it killed more people within a few days than AIDS did in 25 years.
Who needs terrorists, nuclear wars, wicked AI & religious fundamentalists when mother nature is preparing a deadly concoction which would potentially wipe out civilization? These are no times to debate about who goes to heaven and who goes to hell. The people of this planet must focus all their feeble intellects to sustain all that we are and have been. The burden of success in our way of life is tremendous. We are so powerful right now that the only thing we should fear is losing all that we gained, the tower that we built.
Fortunately, nature needs time like we do. And a race is what this is all about. The virus needs to strike the right note to become an efficient killer. If it is too good, it would run out of hosts to reproduce, if it is too slow… it wouldn’t spread fast enough to infect hosts to reproduce. There is an evil golden balance between these two qualities and thats where the angel of death lies.
I’d like to share with you a revelation I’ve had, during my time here. It came to me when I tried to classify your species that I realized you aren’t actually mammals. Every mammal on this planet instinctively develops a natural equilibrium with its surrounding environment, but you humans do not. You move to an area and you multiply, and multiply until every natural resource is consumed. The only way you can survive is to spread to another area. There is another organism on this planet that follows the same pattern. Do you know what it is? A virus. Human beings are a disease, a cancer of this planet. You are a plague, and we…are the cure. — Agent Smith, who later became a virus in the movie trilogy Matrix
