Almighty Abortionist

April 30, 2008 edwinhere Leave a comment

At least 20 percent of pregnancies are known to end in spontaneous abortion of innocent babies. If that results from divinely inspired anatomy, then God is the greatest abortionist of them all.

When faced with the above fact, apologists might play devil’s advocate for God by saying something along the lines of how paradise was lost; but religious people lost a very good chance to explain the “Problem of Evil” when they denied evolution. Had religious people supported evolution, they could have at least argued that unjustified pain and suffering is also necessary for life to prevail. But as usual they thought science was The Enemy.

I don’t know what drives their anti- intellectual sentiments. Why are all scientists evil in the movies? Why don’t geeks deserve the social treatment everyone else receives?

Incompetence is Bad

April 28, 2008 edwinhere Leave a comment

I have a lot of sympathy for incompetent people. But I have come to realize that true incompetence is bad. However, it should be noted that unrealized potential must not be mistaken for incompetence.

Only people with competence greater than or equal to my competence must be hired. People who take free rides with little technical knowledge must not be hired.

New Patterns To Remember

April 24, 2008 edwinhere Leave a comment

I’ve learnt some new things. Nothing can achieve it’s most desirable state directly in this universe. Nothing can always achieve it’s most desirable state indirectly in this universe. That is how it is set up to work. Accepting that happily is the secret to happiness. Accepting it sadly can get you killed. Important corollaries include the inability to have a long term relationship with someone you choose. So beware when you accept that sadly because that can get you to become freaking non-existent which is a bad idea.

Although people think the optimal strategy therefore is not to have any desirable state in mind the actual  optimal strategy is to start trying to achieve the most desirable state directly and then move on to second choices as long as you have second choices. For example, the first college you apply to, should be the best college anyone can apply to. Most probably you will get rejected, and then you take alternate routes to a similar fate. Rejection/Failure should be accepted happily or it can get you killed.

In a situation where second choices don’t exist, the rules are well defined, competition is extreme and barrier of entry low always choose the second choice.

Tunneling is possible. That is, the alternate route to the similar fate can involve some undesirable states. So be prepared to accept that happily. Accepting that sadly can get you killed. And getting killed is a bad a idea.

Being in an undesirable state in the midst of a tunnel doesn’t always mean you are guaranteed to see the other end.

Happiness cannot be achieved when there are no purposes. Stress is bad too. So take vacations and remember to come back to the purpose.

Always look for patterns. In other words, always keep the Stevian dots connected while new dots appear. Always look for understanding. All truths can be accepted happily. Accepting truths sadly can get you killed.

What was done

April 21, 2008 edwinhere Leave a comment

I could have chose to remain the lion of my forest. But I decided to take a walk out. It was tough, humbling and embarrassing but I chose experience instead of complacence. Before my 100 orbits around the sun is done I have decided to see it all. It is not going to be a fun ride, but this is the only ride I have. Unlike the popular philosophies of my religion and culture where peace and tranquility is preferred to success and achievement, I’ve decided to play it like a hero. I do not expect to win because the universe does not owe me anything. I expect to be forgotten like the loser I have been all my life

Quantum Biology

April 20, 2008 edwinhere Leave a comment

It now seems Quantum phenomena has a lot to do with Biological processes than previously thought. Certain bonds called the low barrier hydrogen bonds exist in biochemical processes that lead to hydrogen tunneling which help catalyze certain reactions which are otherwise impossible.

The recently dugg arXiv preprint on natural bird navigation using Quantum Zeno effect is yet another example of Quantum absurdities encroaching into matters comprehensible for our brains that were evolved to think “Classically”.

It seems artifacts that were discovered by evolution to facilitate life are hid right on the fabric of reality.

Universe really looks a thing hard-coded for life. But why is it so? My evolved mind needs stories to tell myself to get rid of the burden of agnosticism. But Occam’s Razor doesn’t make me hypothesize unnecessarily complex realties that fit no evidence.

I am going to be pleasantly baffled if consciousness gets broken down to include these absurd phenomena as primary cause.

Reverence

April 18, 2008 edwinhere Leave a comment

I had a really spiritual experience today while studying enzyme catalysis mechanisms. The feeling of everything that is me and what is out there… all those events happening in high entropy but yet with a hell lot of determinism.

I thought about the absence of God, and how well it fits to the wonder and awe I see in the universe contrasted with total indifference of the universe to our struggles for survival. I reflected about the total arrogance of the religious, in claiming to know everything about someone so complex and hence improbable.. and claiming that, that somebody is so emotionally sensitive to our blasphemies like a little kid and needs tax-exempt pocket money to buy lightning rods that stop his random wrath from hitting his extravagant buildings.

Now is all we have and it will all be forgotten soon. The joy and oneness I experience now is from from study of what can be verified from evidence. It better evidence that what we used to punish people with death.

Exams are next week.

My Pocket Slippery Slope Argument

April 14, 2008 edwinhere Leave a comment

The powers that be have been very busy lately, falling over each other to position themselves for the game of the century. It is of no doubt that this will be defining period in the history of our species. I can see it brewing.

Religion (Islam) will no doubt play an important role in this. I wouldn’t be surprised if relevant centers of western civilization go under the control of Islam. Call it a remnant of my superstitious past, but I do believe this would happen.

Most of us will pretend everything is just fine, and will slowly boil into oblivion. This slippery slope will turn out to be real.

Lessons Learnt

April 6, 2008 edwinhere 1 comment
  1. Creativity doesn’t happen during meetings.
  2. Meetings are to convince team members about decisions made before the meeting by each member to every other member.
  3. Democracy evolves out of Dictatorship. Always start off being a benevolent dictator and gradually become the steward of your team while they start to take control.
  4. Cats are impossible to herd. Never hire cats. Cats dislike benevolent dictatorship. An incompetent cat is extremely dangerous.
  5. Pretentious people must be avoided at all cost.
  6. Each team must be led until democracy evolves in it. And then the leader must move on to lead another team.
  7. ex- local ‘A’ level local university graduates of pure sciences or business schools (not sure) who live with their parents must not be hired.
  8. Polytechnic pure sciences graduates with demonstrated practical abilities must be hired.
  9. A PhD should be hired only when there is a demonstrated need for it. They should not be like people described in 7.
  10. Religious fanatics must not be hired. They have not matured enough.
  11. Brown people rarely fit the above criteria.
  12. Malaysians can be hired as long as they are not political or covertly so.
  13. People who are bothered about accents must be avoided. Accents can be simulated. An accent bothered person can be recognized by looking at the amount of real information conveyed while he/she is talking.
  14. Beautiful girls should asked in detail about the practical experience they claim. It could be possible that they accomplished it with help.
  15. Make personality profiles of every employee. As the company gets bigger, personality profiles must be collected using algorithmic means using covert testing mechanisms. An entire personality profile database complete with the photo of the person and detailed searchable reports must be contained and constantly analysed while making a team.

Maybe it is all going to end

April 5, 2008 edwinhere Leave a comment

SETI has been looking around for a while now, and they haven’t found any intelligence yet in a 100 light year radius. So either there is no one in the neighborhood with our level of sophistication or all civilizations inevitably end by some means. That is a scary thought.

May we are the first ones that are going to make it till the state of maximum entropy. I mean we have all the healthy signs.
